New York: Stepping Into Our Own Movie

In March 2022, we traveled to visit our family and ended up stopping in New York City on the way there and again on the way back. What we thought would be just a short layover became something more meaningful than expected.

As soon as we left the airport and took the train into Manhattan, the city felt strangely familiar. We had seen it so many times in movies and photos that it didn’t feel completely new, but being there made everything real in a different way. Louder, faster, more intense.

We didn’t follow a strict plan. We walked. A lot. Through different neighborhoods, past buildings we recognized and others we didn’t. Surrounded by skyscrapers, we became very aware of how small we were. Walking between those massive structures made it clear: we are tiny inside something much bigger than us. And yet, every step we took still mattered. Like being a needle in a haystack — small, but still capable of leaving a mark.

We ate fast food and takeaway meals without overthinking it, walked through Central Park while patches of snow were still on the ground, and spent hours just moving from one place to another. It was cold, but the energy of the city made us forget about it.

What stayed with me most was how New York puts things into perspective. It shows you how many lives, ideas, and stories can exist at the same time. It makes you realize that you don’t have to have everything figured out to move forward. You just have to keep going.

Walking through those streets reminded me to stay curious and open, and to trust that even small actions can have an impact. Sometimes, being in a place like New York helps you remember that growth doesn’t come from standing still — it starts when you allow yourself to explore.
